What Do You Understand By ‘Subconscious Mind’?

Share
  • We perform multiple activities in our day-to-day lives using our subconscious minds.
  • But what does this “ subconscious mind” signify and how is it so important for us? How does it help us maintain stability in routine tasks? Each of such questions may arise in mind after hearing of this important part of bain.
  • In this article, we would discuss the “subconscious mind” in detail.

The “Subconscious mind”.

  • Have you ever wondered why you can recall when you tried to drive a bicycle for the first time? Or why you can count the sum of repetitions required to do a flawless dance?
  • Even if the initial action for every task is a bit difficult but as soon as you get to learn it over repetitions you get skilled in it.
  • But how does it happens?
  • Such movements that start to need less focus and awareness till it goes on with flow need the action of an important part of the brain called the subconscious mind.
  • The automatic actions of a human being are guided by the powerful inner forces –the subconscious mind.

Where is this mind located?

  • The human capability to organize and control thoughts is dependent upon the information processing carried out by the brain.
  • However, depending on the deeper levels of information processing, the human mind is classified into three mind models by famous Austrian psychologist Sigmund Freud (1856 – 1939).

Three mind model.

As per the ‘three mind model’, the mind is distributed into the following levels:

  • Conscious – this part of the mind describes all opinions and activities within our consciousness or awareness. For instance, the prettiness and pleasance of the smell of a rose.
  • Subconscious – This mind outlines all responses and involuntary movements, of which we can get aware only by thinking about them. For instance, our ability to drive a vehicle.
  • Unconscious – This mind states all past happenings and memories. For example, the first word we’ve learned to speak.

Functioning and activation of the conscious and subconscious mind.

  • Is the activation of the brain different when we experience an effect of subconscious versus conscious mind, is an important point of discussion for many of us.
  • We do often want to know why our conscious opinions are often processed slower than unconscious opinions?
  • Up until recent times, it was difficult to detect where in the brain these thought processes occur or specifically the activation region lies.
  • With the help of brain imaging techniques, researchers have studied the different processing pathways.
  • The making up of process cycles of the brain has improved the neuroanatomy of the brain. It is revealed that pathways of conscious and unconscious beliefs can be distinguished.
  • However, the working path of the subconscious mind is much more difficult to define in comparison to another two mind levels.
  • The subconscious mind does not have its processing pathway else it works in association with both- the conscious and the unconscious.
  • Subconscious thought shapes the behavior of a person.
