5 Electric Organisms Residing Underwater.

Share

Earth, the blue planet has a vast diversity of animal species existing on it. Each of them has its unique attributes, making us curious to learn about them Electric Organisms Residing Underwater.

One such characteristic is producing electricity. Generally, this feature is seen in marine animals. They usually comprise an organ generating electricity. They may either use this organ to defend themselves from the enemies or to get them food.

Since, this electric discharge is spawned by many animals, here is the list of the 5 most known of such marine species. However, reading about these animals can make you freak out of all that scuba diving stuff.

1. Electric ray.

The Electric ray takes the honor to be called an outstanding electric fish with a tendency of generating a high range of electricity. This marine species belongs to the family of Torpediniformes. The name is derived from the Latin word “torpere” which means to paralyze. Its important features include:

  • It is capable of generating 37-220 volts of electricity.
  • With 6 inches as the initial length, it can attain a height up to 6 feet.
  • Generally weighs 180-200 pounds., and has five bright and dark-edged-blue spots on its body.
  • Their food includes small fish and invertebrates lying under the water body.
  • They capture their food by lying down below sand and producing electricity to shock up the prey.

2.  Electric Stargazer.

Electric Stargazer is another electricity-generating marine species. It has a large mouth fronting upwards with a huge head. This fish has its eyes over the head getting it the name “stargazer”. Its characteristics include:

  • It is clever enough in catching its prey.
  • Stargazer hid under the sand and dive up to trap their target passing over it.
  • It is capable of jiggling its maggot-shaped head to attain prey’s focus.
  • It produces electricity from an organ located behind its eyes.
  • Electric Stargazer can generate 50-60 volts of electricity for killing its target.

3. Electric Eel.

The electric eel is the highest electric current generating underwater creature widely known to exist. Even though its name suggests its belonging to the family of eels, but is originally a member of family knife fish (a closely linked species of catfish). Its attributes comprise:

  • The electric eel is the resident chiefly of freshwater lakes and rivers. For instance, like that of Orinoco and Amazon basins in America.
  • The eel is proficient in generating up to 650-660 volts of electricity to exterminate its prey.
  • It can kill a large-bodied target very easily, like the horse, giraffe, etc.

4. Skate.

This underwater species belongs to the family of catfish and is capable of controlling a high electric current. Their exist more than 20 species of catfishes in freshwater bodies. They are habitatnts of mainly river Nile, Africa. The attributes include:

  • The electric catfish can emit 350-450 volts to electricity at once to kill its supper or defend itself from predators.
  • It can attain a height of 4 feet and weight of 20 kg’s up to its whole life.
  • The catfish has a muscular organ just beneath its fins, a soft skin compartment from where it generates the electric currents.

5. Electric catfish.

  • It can attain a height of 4 feet and weight of 20 kgs up to its whole life.
