Belonging to the bird family of Ramphastidae, Toucans are found in Neotropical regions most narrowly related to American barbets. Their family includes five different genera with 41 species. Some other features of toucans comprise:

  • Blazingly colored and marked feathers all over their body.
  • These birds are arboreal and can lay 2-20 eggs at once.
  • Mainly found in small groups called flocks.
  • These birds are drifting and resident breeders.
  • They use their beak mainly for digging purposes.
  • Their weight is between 130-150g, far different from the lettered aracari.
  • They have a rounded tail varying in its length along with the short and compact height.
  • Having a short and thick net, they have small wings to allow them to fly across shorter distances.

Why in headlines?

Toucans, due to their differently-abled beaks have been in the headlines for uncountable times. Further, another aspect to be understood is their beak’s morphology. The beaks of Toucans are made up of only tissues and ligaments and certain other bodily and artificial fibers and do not contain any bones.

Can you think about how their beak works without the presence of bones? This concept may lead to questioning yourselves about how a toucan sustains and obtain its food without any bone near the nose.

Description.

Having small shorter feet, the toes of a toucan are settled in sets. Majorly, they are incapable of showing any sexual dimorphism. They have a beak that allows them to reach deep into the holes of the trees to have their meal.

Further, Toucans has a long tongue i.e. 15 cm long with a grey, narrow texture adding a tasting organ with these regions.

Generally, these birds are of natural origin, from Southern Mexico, Central America, South America, south to northern Argentina, whereas some of them are poor dispersers, especially across the water.

However, these birds are extremely social such that they are observed for even making the groups of 20 -30 for most of the period that, unlike the toucans, flies, creates irruptions, migration, and other sources.

Due to their unique attributes, this bird is one of the most recognized birds across the globe. Mentioning of their native range, they are chiefly hunted for the attractive look they have, as plumage or household facts. Further, toucans are also used to depict the principal cartoon characters in the prevalent media. Some of the main TV shows including this bird includes:
