In the ancient period, India had Gurus, the religious preachers included in its tradition resembling the place of God alive. They used to live in ashramas or the place called “Gurukuls” where they enriched the kids with the ocean of knowledge and imparted religious facts to people living nearby.

Gurukuls also known as maths, were the important buildings of the ancient period that were considered the place to attain “Shiksha” under the saints with an exceptional degree of knowledge. One such paradise is a gurukul in Karnataka. Generally known as Shree Ramachandrapura Math, this Hindu monastery is sited in Hosanagara taluk of Shimoga, Karnataka. This math includes many followers and preachers belonging to different areas including:

  • Saints of Dakshina Kannada
  • Preachers of Udupi
  • Saints from Shimoga district, Karnataka
  • Havyaka brahmins of Uttara Kannada
  • Saints from Kasaragod district, Kerala

The unique aspect- “Swastika” infrastructure.

Since a few years back, this gurukul had been making rounds in headlines for one of its unique features, distinguishing it from other gurukuls located in different parts of India.

The feature is its “Swastika infrastructure” that fascinates the visitors and religious people to visit and acquire a sort of mental peace in this truly beautiful creation of olden times.

Having its whole building as a shape of a swastika (a holy sign of Hindus), this ashrama has more than 500 rooms, along with goushala, the preaching hall, and an auditorium to held events.

It is due to its tremendous beauty and unique infrastructure, it is one of the most visited gurukuls in the world.

Establishment.

Shree Ramachandrapura gurukul was established by Shree Adi Shankaracharya, a godly priest near Gokarna ( a sacred town situated on the west coast of India). Initially, this math was known as Raghuthama Matha.

Guru Adi Shankaracharya had initially appointed his follower Shri Vidyananda as the foremost saint of this monastery. Since then, this gurukul had a constant ancestry of matthdhishas (head of the gurukul).

Presently, Jagadguru Shankaracharya Shri Raghaveshwara Bharathi MahaSwamiji is the 36th guru of this religious foundation. He has succeeded the 35th  Holy saint of Shri Ramachandrapura Mutt, guru Jagadguru Shankaracharya Shri Ragavendra Bharati maha Swamiji. Swastika shape gurukul

Certain other important aspects of math include:

  • No religious barriers restrict the entry to such a holy place, the divine and strong desire to attain knowledge of holy customs is all required.
  • Even the Hindus from a lower cast (basically Bandis, he domestic servants) can get sacred offerings along with a permit to enter the matha.
  • The religious meetings solving communal disputes amid the Havyakas are held periodically, by the adult most priest under the supervision of Guru or the person selected as the head of the gurukul.
