The “shampoo” word has been derived from the word “Champoo” which is ultimately derived from “Chapayati” a Sanskrit term, meaning “soothing”. We also see that in the Indian subcontinent there are a huge variety of ayurvedic extracts and many of them are used for the care of hair also.

The practice of using shampoo dates back to 1500 AD, it is believed that it was prepared from a concoction of boiled Reetha (soapberries), amla (gooseberry), Hib Biscus and Acacia, (Shikakai), and we can also the usage of all these in different modern shampoos in today’s world also.

We can say that, during the industrialization period of colonial time, British traders and businessmen took back this shampoo to Europe & many other parts of the globe. Thus, with trade, the secret & concept of shampooing and also spread over the world and began to be made standardized and modernized.

We can take, sandalwood as an example, Its paste is used as “face care” in soaps and in shampoos also. Not only because of its enchanting and beautiful smell, but it also detoxifies and makes skin glowing & clear. We used turmeric and gram flour as natural scrubs to keep our bodies shining and to reduce unnecessary hair growth.
