To mention the exact location the sea is to the west of the broad steppe of Central Asia, east of the Caucasus, north of the mountainous Iranian Plateau of Western Asia, and south of the fertile plains of Southern Russia in Eastern Europe. Some of the important facts and figures about this waterbody are mentioned as follows:

  • The Caspian sea covers a total of 143,550 sq.m (372,000 km2).
  • It has a volume of 19,000 cu mi with an elaborated area. It is due to this reason, this water body act as greater trading means.
  • The salinity of this waterbody ranges between 1.2-2%. This range is nearly a third of that of the average seawater.
  • The sea is bordered by Kazakhstan from mid-north to mid-east, Russia from mid-north to mid-west, Azerbaijan to the southwest, Iran to the south and adjacent corners, and Turkmenistan along with southern parts of its eastern coast.
  • This waterbody stretches approximately 750 miles from the northward region to its south. Having a normal width of 320km the sea has a gross coverage of over 386,400 kilometers.
  • Further, it has a surface area of about 27 m below the mean sea level.
  • It has the Volga (Europe’s longest river) as the mainstream influx entering at the narrow most north end. There are two other abysmal basins from the southern and central regions.
  • These horizontal differences in turn results in ecological and temporal differences.

Why known as the sea/ocean?

There have been many geologists concerning the fact of this largest pond being called an ocean or the sea. To make it crystal clear, several historical sources had accounted that due to the salinity and its huge size, this water body is designated as the ocean.

Even if it possesses characteristics of a pond or lake, the greater size makes it pronounced differentially. The sea is rich in oil and natural gas which makes it comprised of higher fuel stacks. World’s Largest Pond Entitled as Sea
