Why do SIM Cards have a Cut Corner?

Share

SIM cards have gained their utility as an integral aspect in many fields.  This makes them the most sophisticated tool to stay connected with others. Going through many evolutionary changes, this removable chip has now been modified to nano-SIM-enabled IoT devices in the present world. Why do SIM Cards have a Cut Corner

The enterprises have assembled the Sim cards to associate all their operations wirelessly. But did you know that why a corner of this SIM card is cut at the corner giving it a unique shape? To answer this question we first need to learn about the basics of SIM cards. Let us go through this article to make up a clear understanding in this regard.

About SIM.

Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) helps you to hoard the information of your contact persons and other verified users. They have a key function in smartphones which is an important tool for communication in the modern world. You can easily identify the contact person and can keep interacting with them. Also, you can connect your devices with the Global System of Mobile Communication (GSM). Here, GSM is determined as normal for cellular interactions since the starting of 2G. This removable electronic chip allows you to recognize the benefactor in a network of mobile telephony. Other features of SIM cards include:

  • This electronic chip is comprised of a micro-controller along with a memory to store the information.
  • The SIM we are using at the present point of time has 25 mm of width, 0.76 mm of thickness with a length of 15 mm.
  • There are agencies responsible for standardizing the SIM cards. Two of them include International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • This integrated circuit tracks a card operating system (COS). It helps to store the international mobile subscriber identity number (IMSI) and the key elements linked with it.

So now, moving back to our topic let us know the reason behind the cut corner of SIM cards.

The reason behind the cut corner.

Out of the four corners, there is a slight cut mark on one of the corners of this SIM. It is specifically to elude misarrangement of contacts over the card along with the pins on the mobile phone’s cardholder.

  • There is a corresponding pin on the mobile phones to hold on the SIM card. The connection between these two is made using the PIN 1of the sim card.
  • We can easily allocate the correct position to place the SIM card in the mobile phone using this cut mark as a monitor.
  • Initially, this practice of making a cut mark was internally accepted by ISO. Subsequently was opted by many companies manufacturing mobile phones.

In case a mobile SIM card doesn’t contain this cut corner, can cause the misalignment of the card over mobile machinery. It would become challenging for the manufacturers to insert or place the card properly in smartphones.

Consequently leading to placing the wrong phase of SIM at its position. Lastly, with this cut corner, we can easily understand which side of this card should be placed to which end of the mobile phones.
