Do Plants have Consciousness- a Never-Ending Debate.

Share

Plants arejust like our friends. Due to many reasons, they play an important part in our lives. Their capability to provide us the helping hands in different aspects, questions their existence as an organism with perception. The naturalists get into the thirst of learning more about the inner life of plants to answer to clear their doubts. Plants have Consciousness Never

Subsequently, the cravings to question the intelligence and consciousness of plants have been in debate for a long time. This probable never-ending debate came into light in 1880, when Charles Darwin notices the unresting stimulus of stressed plants. Undoubtedly, plants have a complex cellular structure to perform many functions differentially.

It is assumed by scientists all around the globe that plants carry a well defined communication system. Using this phenomenon they can release special chemicals via their parts to converse with other flora and fauna species. Also, plants tend to send their seeds as a source of information to different regions following the kinship process.

More about the plants.

Unlike human beings, plants also carry different organs to perform their specific functions. Such as roots which provide a defensive mechanism to the plants. The questioning of their consciousness has raised doubt of their functioning to a next extent.

  • In 2014, an experiment was conducted on Mimosa pudica to prove that plants do retain memories or had learning abilities. The experient comprised of falling potted mimosa plants for a small distance. To conduct this, when first plant was dropped, it showed a defensive mechanism by curling its leaves. But once the plant retained that it will not harm them, stopped curling and carrying out any defensive action.

Even if the experiment tells us so much about the plants, does it explain something better about consciousness? The response to this answer is debatable to end. It is based upon how we (human beings) choose to explain our emotions, intelligence, and consciousness. Another conference got the same question repeated, which was answered by Devang Mehta (plant biotechnologist) as “no” as per his theory.

  • An experiment in 1902 involved the “experimentation over consciousness of plants’. This was done by Jagdish Chandra Bose (physicist and biologist) who came up with the idea of observing the motion of plants using anesthetics. As a result, it was revelead that since plants showed a vegetal response to anesthetics, the plants have intelligence. According to some other biologists, plants share a typical effect over the functions which is all due to their intelligence and consciousness.
  • Another scientist and biologist, Dr. Danny Chamovitz from the Manna Center for Plant Biosciences, Israrel mentioned that plants do not hav any awareness intelligence about anything.

Green beliefs of plants.

As per Michael Marder, a philosopher, we (the human beings) are misjudging plants. Whereas Gizmodo stated that there is no consciousness in plants. It is just a way of understanding flora. Mader admitted that human beings are unable to learn only about self and consciousness.

Then leaving the statement undefined for plants would be the appropriate action we can do. Whereas if the consciousness is linked with knowledge, plants fit into the shape very clearly. Moreover, Maden stated that plants can survive and grow altogether just by their planting their cuttings. This phenomenon thereby reveals that if plants carried the will of their own, might have been unconfined like us.

In this chain, the debate over the consciousness of plants remains a mystery for years and years. It is better to keep learning and exploring with what a person has already thought of the plants.
