Lunar corona- a unique natural phenomenon.

Share

All of us are nearly aware of many natural phenomenons occurring in the universe. Also, Scientists and space researchers are the ones who clear our understanding regarding the solar system and other celestial bodies present in it. lunar corona

Apart from such knowledge, certain processes can fascinate our curiosity standards to learn more about them going deep down in their details. One such unusual spectacle is the lunar corona. We will learn about this phenomenon through this article.

What does the lunar corona depict?

Lunar corona is a bright set of colored rings formed alongside the moon when the thin clouds scud across its Brightside. This bright disk carries some fainted circular rings that give it a unique and wonderful appearance giving it the name lunar corona.

The word lunar depicts the term association with that of the moon and corona designates the circular rings on its sides.

The photographs of this unique phenomenon have been captured via the aid of Eva Seidenfaden’s (Atmospheric optics). This image usually shows the disc of the moon. The depiction could be observed more clearly by overexposing it to capture the much fainter corona rings.

Other specifications.

The phenomenal lunar corona is much more frequently noticed than those of their presence around the sun. The image of the lunar corona could only be captured when the clods are much thinner to allow a single corona light ray to reach the eye.

However, this light ray must be scattered or diffracted by only a single droplet. Even if the complete coronal ring is comprised of many tiny droplets scattering over the moonlight, the initial phase requires only a single drop.

Even if the process goes on with a proper effect, sometimes a sudden change can lead to modification in the phenomenon. The change includes the passing of clouds over the moon.

This passage causes the corona to shrink and swell depending on the size of droplets molding it. The small droplets get aggregated to form the largest coronae along with the aureoles across a few diametres of the moon.

What is meant by aureole?

Considering its full form, the lunar corona carries some concentric, pastel-colored trinkets lying around the celestial object, and a crucial perky area in the center is called aureole. Having an appearance of a bluish-white disk fading to reddish-brown towards the edges, this aureole is the only visible part of the lunar corona.

Factors affecting the corona.

There are several factors on which the shape and size of the corona depend. One such attribute is the angular diameter of the corona which is dependent on the size of water droplets involved in the process of its formation. The smaller the droplets, the larger is the corona.

Halos are another phenomenon observed near the moon. But these are different from corona in their formation process. They are majorly formed by refraction whereas the corona is formed by diffraction. Another difference is the size of crystals used for their formation. The halos are formed from larger ice crystals as compared to the corona.
